Unfortunately many folks don't
have a good barometer for what a training should cost and unfairly
compare the cost of helicopter flight training to the cost of a 4 year
degree. Which we all know that helicopter flying is more fun,
but did you know that helicopter
flight training is actually cheaper than an average 4-year
degree. I'm not a mathematician, but I did a little research and what I found may surprise you! I did some homework and found the publication "Trends in College Pricing" published by the College Board (Click here for link). According to the 'College Board': A 4 year degree at at an in-state college costs $13,589 per year, including tuition and room and board (Which totals $54,356 per year). A 4 year degree at an out-of-state college costs $24,044 per year, including tuition and room and board (Which totals $96,176 per year). A 4 year degree at a private college costs $32,307 per year, including tuition and room and board (Which totals $129,228 per year). Okay, so it would seem helicopter training cost of $69,000 without room and board is still more expensive than an 'in-state' 4 year degree...and the helicopter flight training cost doesn't even include room and board! OK, so I'll use their 'room and board' figure for a full year of school (About 9 months which is comparable to helicopter flight training). The average cost is $7,400 per year for room and board. So, 'apples to apples' helicopter flight training would seem to cost: $73,000 + $7,400 = $80,400.00. So since $80,400 costs more than $54,356 then a 4 year degree from the local State University would save a person almost $26,044. Not to mention that helicopter training is cheaper than an -out of state degree, and significantly less expensive than a degree from a private university.... So, it seems that the local 4 year state university really is a great deal except for the fact that: "It takes students an average of more than six years in public four-year colleges and more than five years in private four-year colleges to earn a bachelor’s degree. (Trends in College Pricing 2006)" So, if I multiply 6 years by the cost per year of: $13,589, the total cost of a bachelor's degree is: $81,534.00. Really, if helicopter flight training costs $80,400 and a 4 year degree 'actually costs' $81,534, then flight training is actually $1,534 dollars cheaper than a bachelor's degree. Sorry for all the numbers 'crunching' but I get a little weary with defending the cost of flight training, when every day, people spend far more than for a traditional education. Don't get me wrong, I'm completely in-favor of a college education (I got my bachelor's degree in business in 2005. But I actually use my business degree to do my job every day because I run this business. More education is ALWAYS better, so I am a strong advocate of taking whatever courses to better yourself. A degree can be worth it if you're doing something you absolutely love! I only use the example above to demonstrate that relative to other career preparation options, helicopter flight training really isn't that much more expensive (It's actually cheaper!) The college board also did some comparison's about how much you earn relative to your education level. Did you know that you'd have to get a Master's degree to make a comparable salary to the average helicopter pilot? But I'll get more into that next time... Fly Safe!
