BLUE SKY AVIATION HELICOPTER FLIGHT TRAINING NEWSLETTER "The way a flight school should be" |
Recession Proof Industries in 2008The big ‘Recession’ word is everywhere in the media, rarely a day goes by that I don’t read or hear something that says the sky is falling… So, the obvious question is whether or not this is still such a great time to be investing in flight training. I did a little more research and found a very interesting article on Yahoo.com describing “recession proof” industries in 2008. If there’s going to be a recession, I might as well find out which jobs aren’t likely to be affected. According to this article, the recession proof industries are: energy, healthcare, education, international business and security. What I found most interesting is that each of the ‘recession proof’ industries named in the article has a huge helicopter component. Energy Offshore oil is and has been a huge part of the helicopter industry in the United States. As long as gas prices stay high, helicopter pilots will be needed to support drilling and exploration. Go here to find jobs. Healthcare Emergency Medical Services is another segment of the healthcare industry that is demanding new pilots. Long driving times to the hospital and the realization that getting people to a proper hospital are contributing to the helicopter’s growth in this industry. Education I expect the flight training industry as a whole to continue to need instructors to teach the next generation of helicopter pilots. The military is not producing enough pilots to meet the demand of operators. It is a fact that the Vietnam era pilots are leaving the industry in record numbers, so the civilian market will have to pick-up the slack. Security Airborne law enforcement is a huge part of the security of our infrastructure so I don’t see there being any slack in the demand for helicopter pilots for police programs. The Homeland Security money has paid billions to support helicopter aviation. International Finally, the international pilot demand is still growing! An FAA pilot’s license is still less costly than a license in Europe or Asia. It’s far easier to train in the United States and take your license overseas (Tax Free) than it is to learn to fly in another country. Again, US pilots will continue to be in demand around the globe. It seems that while the rest of the nation is entering a recession, the helicopter industry is dominant in every recession-proof sector listed in Yahoo’s article. I’m still convinced that now’s the best time to become a helicopter pilot! Actually, as the Federal Reserve lowers the interest rate to prevent a recession, the cost of student loans is lower than I’ve ever seen. I wanted to take just a few minutes to share my perspective on the looming recession and what it likely means to prospective helicopter pilots. Fortunately pilots will still be in demand for the foreseeable future, while I can’t say the same for the rest of the economy. If you are ready to make your dream a reality, there couldn’t be a better time to learn to fly helicopters! Fly Safe!
